1)
How effective is film & tv regulation in the
Netflix era?
In this new era of entertainment, we ca see
that mediums such as Netflix have risen. Thus, making it harder for regulators
to regulate. Some may ask is Film and TV regulation necessary especially within
the Netflix era. Because Netflix is a available worldwide, it is hard for a
single country to decide what should happen etc. Therefore, regulating film and
tv may not be effective, as this would mean all the countries would have to
decide on a regulation system to take place, or they can simply just not allow Netflix
to be shown in their country. Although Netflix does use classifications, there
is still problems, because it is easy to access regardless of your age. So, I will
say that regulation isn’t as effective anymore, especially during this Netflix
era where anyone can watch anything they want. I recommend letting people
self-regulate more. As it is becoming more of a choice to the individual and to
the parents. But as there is more access to Netflix and other mediums, it opens
the doors of desensitisation, which ultimately deny entry for regulation, and
lead to more self-regulation.
2)
Should society or the individual or an educated
elite decide what is a appropriate level of sex and violence to expose children
to.
Society and the individual should both
decide the appropriate level of exposure to children. I believe this because
children can’t always make decisions for themselves, an authority figure may
have to step in, and make the choices for them, for e.g. parents or guardians.
It may also be recommended that those who are
educated in the area, especially those who specialise in child psychology, they
should be the ones we consult. The thing is, they are not children, so their
comments and views may be biased or not true. But if you leave such decisions
to a child, then society could worsen. It is recommended that the parents, with
some input from the government should be ideal. Whatever the laws are in the
given country. Children are still young, they are very prone to copying. So if
they are exposed too much, then that causes harm. So there needs to be a limit
of how much they are exposed too if any. But we all should consider the factors
that may play in when making such decisions.
