5 Paragraph Essay | Representation

30 Min Representation Theory Essay
In the representation theory. There are ten views of representation. I will be looking at my summer trailer and I’ll be discussing the representation theory.

Laura Mulvey: The Gaze. Also known as the male gaze, this includes visual pleasure for viewing a female on screen. The camera will put you into perspective as a male, hence why it’s called the male gaze. The theory suggests that the male gaze relegates women to a position where only they are admired for their appearance only. She says the female has two functions, which are: act as an erotic object for the characters to view. Or as an erotic object for the spectators in the cinema to view. This theory occurs in horror movies a lot. Especially with the character “the slut”. Usually there for the other characters.

Clover: The Final Girl. This theory suggest that the final girl is the one who tells the story, usually in the genre of slasher. The final girl is in films such as Nightmare on elm street & Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The final girl is usually a virgin, not having sex protects her innocence. Also, the name of the final girl isn’t always feminine, sometimes it’s unisex. The final girl shows intelligence, and endures through the entire movie. In my trailer, we did not show the final girl, first, because we didn’t want to spoil the film. Also, it was just a teaser trailer. Final girls are usually the main character to tell the story.

Zombies: Zombies are usually a result of society being dead. Usually identified as dead corpses. Usually when there is a problem in the world or some sort of disaster. These zombies used to be humans and now are dead. In my trailer we included zombies, this was to show that there was something wrong going on. The zombies in our trailer always wanted to come to the humans.
Zombies are cannibals. They will eat on human flesh, and not each other.

Representation of Gender roles: In horror, gender is important. The gender roles for example a monster, will usually be male. This is due to men being masculine. And the view that men are superior to women etc. Also, it depends on the sub-genre also. If it is a Monster movie, the monster is mainly male. Just like in our trailer, we included a male actor for the monster roles. Males are represented as strong and dominant.
