300 Word Analysis: The Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the woods is a movie that enforces the sub-genre of Slasher. It takes the genre of horror and portrays almost every cliché, multiple sub-genres are displayed in the film, making it seem hysterical more than being scary. There are a group of friends who go to a cabin, in the woods. These characters are very stereotypical stock characters. Like the dumb blonde, the stoner, the virgin and such and so. Also, the theme included teen punishment, which is a reason to why these characters were included. The first character to die was the dumb blonde, this was very easy to expect as this is a common thing in horror films. Then her boyfriend gets killed. They both had sex, and it seems as if they were punished because of them having sex. Sex before marriage is considered sin, and as teen punishment, they are punished for premature sex, before marriage. At this point we are all like okay, I bet the athlete guy will die next. And that is exactly what happened, the athlete had drunk a lot of alcohol and was drunk. The way teen punishment was portrayed was like it was at its max. The final girl was predicted to survive from the beginning, but instead we get the subversion of that. In slasher and splatter films, the final girl usually steps up and tries to survive but in this case the final girl dies along with her friends, unfortunately. That, we weren’t expecting, so it does subvert the convention of the final girl always surviving. A lot of horror icons were used in this film, such as weapons and masks. The sub-genre of slasher, there was a lot of blood also, an excessive amount. Which helps viewers to identify the sub-genre. Overall this movie to me, portrayed almost every single cliché in a horror movie, although except with a few subversion's in conventions. It deconstructed it and made it funny in a way that we can find it funny.
